CH-LOGIN to AGOV - Info

AGOV-Login replaces CH-LOGIN

CH-LOGIN is being replaced by AGOV-Login, Switzerland’s new public authority login system offering enhanced security and greater user-friendliness. You will be able to use AGOV-Login to access government services at federal, cantonal and communal level. For more information about AGOV-Login, please visit [www.agov.admin.ch:d!agovadmin].

CH-LOGIN is gradually being phased out and will be replaced by the new AGOV login system (see the FAQ below for details). You can already use AGOV-Login in the current phase.

With the next rollout phase, which starts on 7 September 2025, you will be able to switch from CH-LOGIN to AGOV in just a few steps. When logging onto an application, select AGOV-Login instead of CH-LOGIN. We’ll guide you through the simple switch to an existing AGOV login or first-time registration. All of your permissions will be retained during this transition.

Secure login procedures

The new login procedures are secure and, thanks to new technologies, you no longer need a password to use AGOV-Login. Authentication occurs either via the AGOV access app on your smartphone or via a physical security key (FIDO2). You can use your AGOV-Login with federal, cantonal and communal authorities. Instructions and explanatory videos on how to use the AGOV-Login, along with tips and tricks as well as answers to FAQs can be found here: [AGOV help:d!agovhelp].

CH-LOGIN to AGOV - FAQ

Definition of terms

What is AGOV? ▼
×

AGOV is a login system created by the federal government to provide online access to Swiss government services at federal, cantonal and communal level, e.g. to file your tax declaration.

What is CH-LOGIN? ▼
×

CH-LOGIN is a login system provided by the federal government’s eIAM service. In the medium term, it will be replaced by AGOV, a new public authority login solution that will also work at cantonal and communal level. AGOV-Login offers several advantages over CH-LOGIN. If you don’t have an AGOV-Login yet, we recommend registering directly with AGOV. CH-LOGIN registration is still possible, but we advise against it. If you choose to register via CH-LOGIN, note that federal applications generally require two-factor authentication (2FA). We suggest using an authenticator app that generates one-time passwords (OTP). During registration, you must also set security questions for secure account management. For more information about CH-LOGIN or AGOV-Login, please visit our eIAM help page.

Strategic alignment

Why is CH-LOGIN being replaced by AGOV-Login? ▼
×

AGOV is Switzerland’s new public authority login system. You can use it with federal, cantonal and communal offices, e.g. to file your tax declarations online. Thanks to new technology, AGOV no longer requires a password. This makes it more secure and more convenient than password-based login systems like CH-LOGIN. The latter is only used within the Swiss Federal Administration.

Support

How do I get help? ▼
×

We have set up a central eIAM help page for you. There you will find help articles on how to register, manage and use your AGOV-Login. You will also find information about CH-LOGIN and instructions on how to switch from CH-LOGIN to AGOV-Login.

Roadmap

When will CH-LOGIN be replaced by AGOV? ▼
×

The replacement of CH-LOGIN by AGOV-Login began in 2024. Since then, AGOV-Login has been available for federal administration services. However, it is still a ‘bring your own ID (BYOI)’ identity that supplements CH-LOGIN and does not include verification (identity check).

I have neither an AGOV-Login nor a CH-LOGIN. Should I register for an AGOV-Login or a CH-LOGIN? ▼
×

We recommend registering for an AGOV-Login as it offers several advantages over CH-LOGIN. Doing so means that you will not have to switch from CH-LOGIN to AGOV-Login later on. However, registering for and using a CH-LOGIN is still possible. The only current exception is verified (confirmed) electronic identities, which are only available with an AGOV-Login.

When can I switch from CH-LOGIN to AGOV-Login? ▼
×

The switch from CH-LOGIN to AGOV login will be supported from 7 September 2025.

When do I have to switch from CH-LOGIN to AGOV-Login? ▼
×

The date when switching from CH-LOGIN to AGOV-Login will become mandatory has not yet been decided. We recommend switching to AGOV-Login as soon as possible to enjoy its benefits.

When will my CH-LOGIN no longer work? ▼
×

The date when the CH-LOGIN can no longer be used has not yet been decided. We recommend switching to AGOV-Login as soon as possible to enjoy its benefits.

Will I be notified of the date when the switch to AGOV-Login becomes mandatory? ▼
×

Yes, we will notify you as soon as the switch becomes mandatory. The form of notification is currently being clarified (possible forms include notification directly upon login and/or additionally via email).

Can I also switch from AGOV-Login to CH-LOGIN? ▼
×

No. Switching from AGOV-Login to CH-LOGIN is not possible and it also does not make sense to do so. CH-LOGIN is being replaced by AGOV-Login. Therefore, all CH-LOGIN users will eventually have to switch to AGOV-Login.

Switch from CH-LOGIN to AGOV-Login

How can I create an AGOV-Login? ▼
×

Various help articles on how to register for an AGOV-Login, along with step-by-step instructions, can be found directly at AGOV help.

Do I need multiple AGOV-Logins? ▼
×

Your personal details, including the email address registered for your AGOV-Login, will be shared with the applications you use. The application may use this information in different ways. If you wish to separate your private and business contexts, we recommend using multiple AGOV-Logins with separate private and business email addresses.

Does my AGOV-Login need to be registered with the same email address as my CH-LOGIN? ▼
×

No. You can easily switch from CH-LOGIN to AGOV-Login even if your CH-LOGIN and AGOV-Login are registered with different email addresses. When logging in for the first time via AGOV-Login using a different email address, you will be asked during the guided migration whether you have a CH-LOGIN with another email address. Answer “YES” and enter your CH-LOGIN email address. This enables a smooth transition even with different email addresses.

How can I switch from CH-LOGIN to AGOV-Login? ▼
×

  1. If you already have an AGOV-Login, proceed to step 3.
  2. If you do not yet have an AGOV-Login, open your web browser and go to the following URL to register: .
    • If you need help with registration, visit the following page: AGOV help
  3. You already have an AGOV login. In this case, go to the URL of the federal government application that you wish to use or go to MyAccount on eIAM.
  4. In the login selection, choose « AGOV ».
  5. Log in via AGOV.
  6. You will be automatically guided through the one-time process in the system. This requires you to log in with your CH-LOGIN one last time to ensure that you are the rightful owner of this CH-LOGIN.
  7. Once you have successfully logged in, your CH-LOGIN will be deleted. All your permissions and data in federal government applications will remain intact and will be transferred to your AGOV-Login. Your CH-LOGIN will no longer be active from this point forward.
  8. From now on, you can log in securely and conveniently to federal government applications with your AGOV-Login.

What happens to my permissions and data when switching from CH-LOGIN to AGOV-Login? ▼
×

All your stored permissions and data that you were able to use with your CH-LOGIN will remain intact when you switch from CH-LOGIN to AGOV-Login. Only the login procedure will change.

How many CH-LOGINs can I replace with one AGOV-Login? ▼
×

An AGOV-Login can be linked to no more than one CH-LOGIN.

If I answer ‘No’ to the question ‘Do you have a CH-LOGIN?’, can I still link it to my AGOV-Login later? ▼
×

No, this is not possible. If you do not link your AGOV-Login to your CH-LOGIN the first time you use it with a federal government application, separate accounts will be created in the applications. These accounts will be linked to your AGOV-Login but not to your CH-LOGIN. Your previous accounts and permissions will remain associated with your CH-LOGIN.

I currently use a ‘Bring Your Own Identity’ (BYOI) (not AGOV). Can I replace it with an AGOV-Login? ▼
×

This depends on whether your BYOI identity is linked to a CH-LOGIN.
  • If you have linked a CH-LOGIN with password (and possibly also 2FA) to a BYOI identity, then you have a CH-LOGIN and can connect it to your AGOV-Login. The link to both your BYOI identity and your CH-LOGIN identity will be removed during this process. You will then use only your AGOV-Login for federal government applications.
  • If you have a BYOI identity that is not linked to a CH-LOGIN, it is an independent electronic identity. It cannot be connected to an AGOV-Login.

Account management

How can I update my personal information? ▼
×

It is important that your personal data such as first name, surname, email address, etc. are kept up to date. This is generally possible via account managmenet. How to do this depends on the login you use.
  • If you use CH-LOGIN, update your data via eIAM MyAccount.
  • If you use AGOV, update your data via [linktext:d!agovme]. Your data will then be automatically updated the next time you log in to a federal government application.
  • If you use a BYOI identity provider (e.g. Switch edu-ID), update your data directly via the provider. Your data will then be automatically updated the next time you log in to a federal government application.

Verified (confirmed) identities

What is a verified identity? ▼
×

A verified identity means that the identity of the person using the electronic identity (CH-LOGIN or AGOV-Login) has been confirmed through established processes. These are electronic identities for which personal details such as first name, surname, date of birth, sex and ID number have been verified. In addition, a copy of the official photo ID (passport or identity card) used during the verification process is typically stored.

Why do I need a verified identity? ▼
×

Federal government applications determine whether a verified identity is required for their use. This is particularly relevant for applications with high data protection requirements. If you attempt to use such an application with an unverified identity, you will be notified that the application requires a verified identity. Follow the instructions in the note to obtain a verified identity of the required quality.

How do I obtain a new verified identity? ▼
×

As of September 2025, verified identities will only be available via AGOV. If you use federal government applications that require verified identity and do not yet have a CH-LOGIN by September 2025, you must register and verify an AGOV-Login.

I already have a verified CH-LOGIN. What happens when I switch to AGOV-Login? ▼
×

CH-LOGINs that have already been verified, either via CH-LOGIN video identification (nHEC+) or through the VASCO token issuance process, retain their verification status until CH-LOGIN is deactivated. This remains valid even if they use a non-verified AGOV login. Only from that point onward is a new verification in AGOV required. As soon as you use eIAM with a verified AGOV-Login, AGOV assumes responsibility for the verification.

Important:
Please note that the verification of your CH-LOGIN is valid only for federal government services. Your AGOV-Login itself is not considered verified (e.g. for cantonal or communal services).
